Nature in the Walkable City: How Plants and Wildlife Enrich Urban Life
Summary
Nature in the Walkable City is an exhibit by 15 botantical artists illustrating, capturing through fine art, how nature enriches urban living and is best experienced on foot.
Across the country, a new generation of Americans is flocking to dense, walkable urban neighborhoods, the latest in prime real estate. Moving in as well are older, empty-nester households. It is notably evident in Washington, even in parts of the city once considered less desirable. What’s the appeal? A lively neighborhood, distinctive architecture, abundant nightlife, historic and cultural attractions, along with shortened drive times, all beckon these new urban residents. No less important is nature’s contribution to the built environmenare – the parks, tree-lined streets, gardens, plazas, even wildlife. Add in the new DC priority for green infrastructure, nature as a buffer against intense storms and flooding.
Objectives
To underscore for the metro DC design community and other key constituencies, as well as the general public, the importance of the city’s natural elements as they are central to the community’s health and well-being.

Gordon is showing a mix of paintings and drawings, skylines and streetscapes, and notebooks with small drawings, urban themed, including Washington DC
I’ll have two small artworks in the show, a small drawing and a small oil painting. We were asked to provide a poem that inspired the work, and I turned to “As Time Goes By,” from my favorite film, Casablanca.
The show opens Wednesday, November 23 and runs through Saturday, Dec 17.

Gordon is showing urban-themed oil paintings and drawings, skylines, street scenes, figurative work, including some inspired by Soho Tea&Coffee, the venue. Thanks to owners Helene Bloom and Fran Levine. Opening reception is Sunday, April 23, 4 to 6 pm. The work will be up from Monday, April 17 to Sunday, June 25.
